Painful Removal

Question
What makes hair removal painful for some cases, and not so painful in others. I met a guy who said that he would never get hair removed again, because of the pain. He got hair removed from his upper back and said it was almost unbarable. But I know a girl who said it wasn't so bad. Can someone who has had it done comment on the pain of the lasers?

Answer
Some guys are whimps when it comes to pain. Seriously, there are areas that tend to be more painful and, of course, the more follicles there are in an area, the more painful it is.

Answer
Totally depends on the setting, and the part of the body, and how much hair you have.
My upper arms didn't hurt a bit, and I've got a ton of dark hair on my upper arms. I actually have places where 2 hairs are growing out of the SAME follicle.
The middle of my upper back, was bearable compared to waxing, but every 2nd zap made me jump from the pain. Oh and you sweat a lot from your armpits. It's the body's natural reaction to the pain. My technician said it's very common. Both women and men do it apparently.
I have a really good tip though. Find a topic that interests you and your technician and talk. It totally takes your mind off the pain. When I wasn't talking I found myself clinching up my muscles and bracing for each branding zap.

Answer
I have found that concentrating on deep breathing and relaxing the body is helpful, too. The more tense you are and anticipating the zap, the more you tend to feel it.

Answer
Tolerance to pain varies greatly from person to person, and then in each person it varies from day to day. I have some clients that practically come off the table when I'm using the lowest setting possible, and then I've had a few that have actually fallen asleep while doing electrolysis on their upper lips!
Drinking plenty of water helps. It hydrates the brain cells that sense pain. More hydration, less pain sensation. Cutting out caffeine helps, as it dehydrates the body. A lot of it is mind set. The more people tend to want the hair removed, the more they tolerate it.

Answer
I tell my clients that the first treatment is the most uncomfortable one. The reasons are: there are a lot more hair follicle for laser to destroy and the hair is coarser . As you go through the subsequent treatments the hair gets finer and finer and there are fewer and fewer hair follicles absorbing the laser.
If you feel discomfort during the procedure, just keep thinking about the results and how good you will look once you are done.....Excellase in Raleigh, NC
