Question
I have finally convinced myself to get LHR and was hoping that someone from the Toronto area can let me know where they went and what their results have been so far.
I have made appointments with Sunnybrook (Gentle Lase, and Lightsheer), a plastic surgeon (Middleton) who uses Epilight, and Baywood Clinic (they use Gentle Lase and also have a Yag laser). If anyone has been to either of these places please let me know how it went.
My skin colour is light brown, and I have course black hair on my face. I don't think that I would absolutely need to use a Yag laser but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Answer
look up your skin type, if it's type IV or darker, you need a Yag. With GentleLASE or LightSheer, settings would be too low to kill the hair because they're trying not to burn your skin by not going higher. Definitely stay away from GentleLASE. LightSheer COULD be ok if you're type IV, not darker though. If you describe it as light brown, that would usually mean that it's dark enough for a Yag. Types I-III are pretty pale white skins. Stay away from Epilight, it's notorious for its ineffectiveness. Run a search for recommendations. I've seen several for Toronto on this and the other 2 forums (hairtell and consumer beware). Try there as well.
Answer
I guess I would be a type V. I am of Indian origin but am pretty light skinned.
If there are any Indian girls in the Toronto area who have had laser hair removal done on there face I would really appreciate the feedback.
Answer
If you're a light skinned Indian (like me) I would consider you a IV not a V. Coincidentally I live in Toronto and I'm also looking for a LHR place. Actually I'm trying to figure out if I should do laser or IPL. I think laser seems to have better results but hard to get good research on the subject.
The places I'm considering are PURE Med Spa (use LightSheer Diode Laser) and A&T Laser Inc. Beyond Laser (use IPL). PURE is having a special for December where they're offering 20% off on LHR so you could buy a package. Only problem is it's downtown so may not be convenient for you.
Please post when you decide on a place because I'd like to know also.
Answer
IPL is especially NOT a good option for darker skins. I would only consider an IPL like Aurora with RF technology for light skin and medium darkness hair (brown and lighter brown). Otherwise, true lasers are more effective and produce faster results. Type IV and darker needs a Yag. Type IV and lighter, needs a LightSheer. Experience of the tech matters a lot here too.
Answer
I'm in the downtown area as well.
I'm leaning towards Sunnybrook because the dermatologist that would be treating me is very well known. I've also heard good things about it on this forum. Then there is Baywood clinic which has both lightsheer and yag lasers. Yag is supposed to work well on our skin type. However, I haven't heard anything on the establishment itself.
I've heard some horror stories about Epilight so I don't think that I want to try that.
I have three consultations next week. I'll let you know how they go. By the way, what areas are you looking to treat?
Answer
Do you have the number for Sunnybrook? I'd like to talk to them as well. I'm looking to have my arms and legs done.
Answer
The doctor at Sunnybrook I'm seeing is Kucy Pon and the number to book an appointment is (416) 323-6217.
Answer
Thanks Jaz! I called them but they only do appointments during the weekdays which could be a problem for me. Please update though after your consultation. I booked my first lhr appointment with PURE for Monday (decided to go with diode laser). This is exciting !
Answer
No problem. I have my appointment at Sunnybrook on Monday as well. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm also going to Baywood Clinic on Wednesday. I think there is a considerable difference in the prices though. From what I've heard Sunnybrook charges $500 per session for the full face and Baywood charges $249. I'm not quite sure why the cost is double at Sunnybrook. Seems strange to me.
Answer
sometimes it helps to tell them about a competing price. they might be willing to match
Answer
Sunnybrook may be able to get away with the high price because the procedures are done by dermatologists and it's affiliated with a hospital. If you're not going to go when Sunnybrook you may want to just price shop with other places. It's also the holiday season so you may get a special discount, you might as well ask if they have any.
Answer
At Baywood the procedure is also done by a dermatologist. You may want to try them out as well. Their prices are listed on their website.
Answer
Thanks Jaz, I did take a look at Baywood's prices. A bit too high for me. I'm getting a better deal at PURE. Also, I was looking on Lumenis website regarding the LightSheer diode and I found this before and after photo of an Indian woman:
I know I'm lighter than her so I figure the diode should be effective for me.
Answer
Hey Ladies,
I just had to get in on this conversation.
I have done my treatments at PURE MED SPA and it's been wonderful! Your making a great choice with them. I had a serious facial hair problem and now after 6 treatments I just have a few strays and I am getting them touched up mid January, at no charge!
They really know how to make you feel comfortable and the place is a spa so it's very relaxing and you feel like your getting a facial rather than being in a hospital for an appointment.
Good luck with your hair free journey!
