Question
Hi, I just started researching Electrolysis about a month ago and had one treatment done 2 days ago. I am right now treating my chin area, I have fair skin and fair hair..but its course and gets long and sticks straight out. I am 20 years old and never have had a problem with hair until recently (getting checked out and tested for hormonal problems). The first place I contacted was a lady who does this out of her home a few minutes away from me. She has a private seperate housing in her downstairs set up with all the equipment and sterilization machines. I got good vibes from her and figured I'd give her a try, the first 15 minutes were free.
She used a gold needle on me because I am allergic to steal and uses the up to date Electrology equiptment (Apilus Senior II). She used a Microflash on me and said that would be the best. She had trouble tugging some hairs out (she said she refuses to tweeze them) and so upped the velocity of the flash.
My question is, I have been getting fairly moderate acne on my chin and when she worked on me I had broken out the day before pretty bad. She said it wouldnt bother it but actually help clear my acne up. Is this true? Because the next day my acne was even redder, more swollen and very tight along with the area under my chin she worked on. Ive never had acne get like this before on me, it looks absolutley horrible. I also have tiny pustules and red scabs where she took hair out, I was told its normal but they have made my chin swollen. I went back to her today and she took a look and said I'm just more sensitive and will have to go for shorter time lengths. She gave me an aloe vera/vitamin A cream to put on it and it seems to have soothed it some. She told me not to use makeup while its like this, but I refuse to go out into public with a badly red swollen and lumpy chin.
I am afraid this is going to scar, or take a very long time to go away..what is the duration for healing after getting a treatment and do you think she is using the right method on me? I have another appointment next week if this goes away by then. She seems to be a very knowledgable good Elecrologist, and even said to try other people out.
My last question is..do you tip Electrologist's like you would a hair dresser? I know it may seem a silly question but its expensive as it is and I didnt know if it was proper to tip them or not.

thank you for your reply. I think my skin is very sensitive..it always has been. I get razor burn everytime no matter how careful I am or what I use. I also break out easily with irritation to my face, so I'm guessing that is why its so severe. I have to say it was quite painful for me and I have a high tolerance to pain (tattoos and many peircings, never bothered me). Its been 3 days now and I have small dark red dots where she inserted the needle, along with small painful lumps, almost feels and looks like acne but isnt.
Have you ever had someone with skin like this, and if so does their skin ever get used to it and stop breaking out so much after?
Answer
I actually had minimal acne until i started electrolysis. Now I get whiteheads in random places, ingrown hairs that turn into big pimples and scar, and overall my skin looks crusty. Despite all this, i'm still somehow going through with the treatments.
Answer
Indigal, electrolysis does not CAUSE acne. Perhaps what you think is acne is an allergic reaction to the needle your electrologist is using?
Perhaps you're just starting to experience some skin problems and it's a coincidence? Acne is when your pores are clogged...electrolysis removes hair from the follicles. It doesn't make sense for one to cause the other...
Answer
Indiagal,
Ask your electrologist if she can use less intensity. If the hair still slides out well with a lower intensity, maybe this will reduce the scabbing and irritation. If your electrologist does not apply aloe vera gel right after your session, buy and take your own and have her apply it for you.
When you go home, aftercare is simple and pretty effective if you cleanse the area with witch hazel or a mild antibacterial soap and then apply 100% aloe vera gel. Get the clear stuff. Fruit of the Earth brand is about $3.00 a tube in my locale. Wal-MArt has it along with Meijers if you have either store near you. It gets kind of hard to find in the winter months.
Tea Tree Oil is fabulous for use at night for at least the first three days. Get a good brand like J's. Tea Tree oil helps to control the bacteria and gets rid of the follicular debris that may be left behind in the damaged follicle after destruction. Sometimes a little piece of the hair root is left behind and the response of the body is to surround it and eat it up. That's why pus and inflammation forms.
Use 100% clear Aloe Vera Gel during the day and tea tree oil at night for three days. Keep make up and dirty hands off the area. Cleanse with something mild like witch hazel or antibacterial soap. Do not use anything else. Try this and maybe you will heal better and faster.
