How long before dark red/brown spots fall off after peel?

Question
Hi, I did a 25% TCA /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peel on Tuesday (so this is day 4) to the back of my hands, lower chest, and arms. I have many freckles and wanted to possibly be able to make them somewhat dissappear after having them 40 some years. Now I am peeling, but not sheets or anything and the darker spots are hard but sore some so I certainly don't want to peel those off or use an exfoliant yet, but I just wonder if the spots will actually fall off or it will just turn back into another freckle again you know? This is my first TCA peel. I had tried IPL and blue peels to my arms and back in the past for lots of freckles with little avail. I have heard fraxel might work, but if I can get a TCA peel to work I save tons of money and just wondering if anyone has done this? Thanks PS Maybe I need to go to a 50% strength to actually get rid of freckles and have the solution be even more of a medium to deep peel? I know laser resurfacing worked wonders on my face in 03 in removing the freckles, but they don't do that on the arms and back. I wish! Guess I am wondering as we have something we need to go to tomorrow and my hands are all peeling and looking very old with the few dark (medium brown more) spots here and there mixed with dark red areas thru my arms themselves.

Hello:
You may need to do several peels, spaced a few weeks apart to acheive best results.
You will also want to use a good sunscreen- if you don't, those spots will just come back- and use a /mmh/product/beauty/index.vm?procid=13" target=_blank>skin lightener product - something with hyrdroquinine and/or kojic acid in them. That will help minimize the formation of pigment in the new skin l/mmh/product/beauty/ayer/index.vm?procid=13&catid=642" target=_blank>ayers.

Thanks so much LeKat for your information. I was hoping you would write and let me know what you thought! I did (I know I should not have) use a tweezer last night to peel off a few small areas that were coming off and I do see that some of my freckles have disappeared thru the pink/medium red color and some are within it still. There is your thought that it will take a few more peels. I think I will move up to 50% but it will take awhile for my fair skin to heel I am sure. I promise not to do any more then these three areas that I used the tweezer on to see if the freckles were coming off with the dead skin which I told you they partically are. Obviously the ones that are deeper in the dermis have been with me for years. I do have some hydroquinine I can use from my PS office. If I don't try to take off anything more how many days LeKat do you think I still have till everything totally peels as honestly it seems like it will be days without exfoliating and I am on day #5 right now for my back of my hands, entire arms and lower chest. Did you ever have freckles or have known someone that had them there whole life that was actually able to have them be gone? I have always wanted to wear something with a lower back but my unsightly (and I mean many, many, many) freckles have alawys stopped me from wearing one etc. Thanks for any insight and I have been staying out of all sun and keeping the spots I did tweeze off (3 quarter size ones) in Vit E and Aquaphor. I LOVED the facial resurfacing in 03 as far as all my freckles were gone, but as you have probably heard too you can /mmh/product/scar_reduction/index.vm?procid=42" target=_blank>scar with trying anything like that to the back or arms. Have you heard of fraxel?

Answer
Definately load up on the sunscreen!
No, no freckles- I had terrible skin- very fair, and I did my share of tanning (mostly -burning-) back in the 70's and 80's, plus some bouts with cystic /mmh/product/beauty/acne/index.vm?procid=13&catid=205" target=_blank>acne.
Consistent use of good skin care products (and a lot of patience) tremendously improved my complexion.
That is in stark contrast to my upper back- which is loaded with spots and uneven pigmentation. But, I don't get to see it staring back at me in the mirror, so I ignore it .
I have heard of fraxel, but I don't know much about it all.
I have learned, that we need to use good skin care ingredients and sun protection- consistently otherwise any improvement will be temporary.
You will need several peels to get where you want to be- just be patient and use ample sunscreen in between.
The skin lightener 2x a day + sunscreen. You may want to add a good AHA cream to put on after the hydroquinine. That will help keep your skin turn over rate in between the peels.

Lekat I can't thank you enough for your help! Your replies are always so informational and pleasant also! Sorry you are dealing with the same spots too as I am, but your's being more to years of sun vs my having freckles since I was a toddler! =) I will use the hydroquinine (does it come in a cream as I don't like sprays and that is what mine was) and then the AHA. Any products you highly recommend? Thanks again so much! PS I am /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peeling more today but could see thru a bigger lighter magnyfying glass that I will be peeling for days. Suppose that is diff between a 15% and the 25% I used? It is day 6 today and I am still /mmh/product/beauty/index.vm?procid=13" target=_blank>wrinkled in many areas with dry /mmh/product/beauty/index.vm?procid=13" target=_blank>skin waiting to slough off!

Answer
Hi Steveeann:
If you have the means, you may want to get the obagi nuderm clear and exoderm. The clear has 4% hydroquinine it, and the exoderm has aha's in it- it is applied over the clear.
I tried those products on my face, but they really didn't do anything for me- as I don't have pigmentation issues there. I didn't want to waste the product, so about a month ago I started using them on my hands, neck and decoliette- about 3 -4 nights a week. It is slowly fading the sallowness I had on those area's from years of not using sunscreen.
You can get them on ebay for less than what a doctors office charges.
They are not cheap for non face use, but they do work over time. When you achieve a good amount of fading, you can switch to an OTC 2% hydroquinine product - and any drug store aha to use with it.
With your skin thinned out from the /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peels, the ingredients will absorb nicely.

Answer
I might ask our esthetician at my PS's office tomorrow about at least purchasing the clear for my skin like you mentioned as I know they sell /mmh/product/beauty/obagi/index.vm?procid=13&catid=202" target=_blank>obagi for sure. I am just so dry right now and I feel like I might not ever truly /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peel everything off or it is going to take forever as this is day 7 now today and only bits and pieces have flaked off. Time for another round of warm compresses I think right now as that sure seems to help you know being I can't sit and try and peel all of this off my lower chest and back of my hands (they are mostly done sloughing off with quite a bit of improvement there). I do notice that where I used the tweezers and peeled those three small quarter size areas off on my right arm that the skin is healing over it already. Bottom line I truly think I am going to have to use the 50% next time vs the 25% but will wait a month and prepare my skin more with the products you listed. This time it may get more into the upper dermis vs the epidermis l/mmh/product/beauty/ayer/index.vm?procid=13&catid=642" target=_blank>ayers Lekat even though I did leave it on longer. Do you hear that it takes more strengths and peels with /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/home_peels/tca/index.vm?procid=4&catid=1045&subcatid=1047" target=_blank>TCA to get further in. I am not concerned with /mmh/product/scar_reduction/index.vm?procid=42" target=_blank>scarring at this point knowing how the 25% turned out. I will not do the back of my arms next time though as that skin is softer and no freckles on there really unless I do a 15% on there while I am doing 50% on the rest. I am fair skin and my skin has been thru plenty with IPL and Blue Peels that did not work so hopefully I can in time finally get rid of these freckles if I keep using /mmh/product/beauty/sunscreen/index.vm?procid=13&catid=304" target=_blank>sunscreen and staying out of the sun which is not hard to do here in the midwest except the summer months. Thanks again for all your help! Your wonderfuly at replying!

Answer
Lekat checked out ebay a bit for the obagi although my PS office gives me 10% off their rates for having had surgery etc. I am wondering if this is a lotion or /mmh/product/beauty/index.vm?procid=13" target=_blank>cleanser for exfoliating you are suggesting as I saw a few different things for obagi nuderm on there. It also said there was something called obagi exforderm (not exoderm as you mentioned) on there so is it exforderm or exoderm? Thanks alot!

Answer
My bad, I should have typed 'exforderm'---!
They are lotions- I don't think the cleanser would make much of a difference.

Steveanne:
When I had my fraxel txs. the nurse who assisted was having IPL done for her freckles. She had lots of huge freckles all over her face and arms (she was born with them).
Over the months of my fraxel txs. I saw her freckles on her face fade dramatically. She said they were doing very light IPL txs. to it. She showed me her arms. She had done halfway up one arm with the IPL, it was almost totally clear of freckles. I could not believe the difference.
It would appear that IPL works, but I think it depends on the technician and the type of machine.

Beeguy thank you so much for your thoughts on the dishwasher. Honestly I am for sure trying that tonight because it is day 7 and I have tons of flaky skin but only maybe half of it has actually come off and when I cheated and tried to take a few areas off with the tweezer then it just takes longer to heal the reddened area it seems. So you never really got a /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peel with those two treatments you used then eh? I honestly would like to try 50% when my skin is ready of the /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/home_peels/tca/index.vm?procid=4&catid=1045&subcatid=1047" target=_blank>TCA now that I have got down to the dermis l/mmh/product/beauty/ayer/index.vm?procid=13&catid=642" target=_blank>ayer and plenty of my freckles are still there. But I am going to order the /mmh/product/beauty/obagi/index.vm?procid=13&catid=202" target=_blank>obagi so hopefully it will arrive in a few days and it's ALOT cheaper on e-bay then going thru my PS office by far. I will use the nu derm clear (only 2 oz so will have to use it sparingly) and the exfoderm (I even spelled it wrong Lekat by the way as it is exfoderm not exforderm!). I really should just get in the tub tonight with a good home made exfoliator. My g/f suggested using sugar and lotion and conditioner equal parts. Anyone ever heard of that?

Answer
Rosyface were you using the fraxel for freckles or did you see that it worked as a top PS in the area said it works well for that. See I had a bad experience with IPL. Sure it helped a bit but not to the extent it sounds like your g/f had. I wish I knew what type of beam she had etc as the guy that did mine charged me thousands for my back and arms and by the end was making it half price etc as he said he had not seen ususally where he could not remove freckles except my case. Honestly he doesn't even work there anymore so I think he probably was not doing it all correctly or at the right numbers. I would so wish for these to all be gone, but at 40 something that is wishful thinking maybe.

Answer
I had IPL at SkinKlinic in NYC for sun spots/ freckles on my chest and back - it works!
They darken and then a week or so later fall off.
It is somewhat expensive though. SkinKlinic was fair - $300 for chest area, $400 hands or something like that and you get a discount w/ a package of 4 - which I used to do different areas.
I would not try a 50% TCA /mmh/product/chemicalpeel/index.vm?procid=4" target=_blank>peel, I did and burned. Luckily it was not a large area.
Lekat is right, you have to keep up the daily maintenance.

Answer
Sherry I am SO glad you responded! I am glad to hear of a few good IPL experiences as I know a few that did not work, including mine. See now if I could just get your clinic over here in the midwest I would have it made. My IPL did work some..but I would say after 5 sessions mind you (and very expensive at that) on my arms and back and some of my chest I would say maybe 25% of my freckles were removed if that, and that was 5 years ago and they are back! Thanks for your thoughts on the 50%. I was just desperate I think more then anything and being I just tried the 25% with some freckles being removed I thought a higher TCA would help. I guess I would just be better to dilute my 50% I have and just use the 25% over again in a few weeks once I know my /mmh/product/beauty/index.vm?procid=13" target=_blank>skin is healed and throughly flaked. I did get in the tub tonight and did the warm compress thing, and now the diswasher is going so I am going to go get near it and open it up a few times like Beeguy suggested! I will have to lift my shirt up though to reach my back area getting the steam and make sure no kids are around or the hubby or they will think I have gone insane!
