Question
I have been researching ps's in my city and nearby cities to hopefully find a great ps for a redo a few years down the road (3 - 5). From the web sites I've read, saline is preferred over silicone in western Canada, even though silicone is available to us. It seemed obvious to me when I went for my consultation pre BA that my ps preferred to use saline. Even though silicone is more natural feeling, it seems the ps's prefer saline because it exists naturally in the body and should a leak occur this is more safe in their opinion. I found this interesting, and I'm glad I have a few years before I'll consider surgery again so I can see what new information they've found by then regarding silicone. Perhaps silicone is preferred everywhere but in Canada? What have other Canadians found in their research?BA Jan 11/06

In england 90% of people have silicone gel implants and 10% saline the surgeons here prefer silcone. They say silicone look more natural and there likely to last more years then saline.
It seems in america everyone has saline and only people with deformaties or illness have silicone.
Im having silicone implants in 3 wk lets hope they live up to expectations. whats the percentage like in canada?

My point is that if i had more breast tissue i might wanted saline implants as they seem to be safer, but wit what i had pre op, saline would not feel natural at all and i would most likely had rippling which is not fun either. I'm not sure, but i think i've read that the chance of developing CC is higher with silicone than with saline and this the fear i have. So, if you have enough breast tissue, considering saline makes sence to me.http://www.makemeheal.com/pictures/viewAlbum.php?albumid=1314

I don't know what the % of patients with saline and silicone are - it would be interesting to find out. Saline seems to work for people with enough breast tissue. I was like you pre op Charlize so the saline's don't feel that great. I have looked at so many http://www.makemeheal.com/pictures/viewAlbum.php?albumid=1314

I'm in Alberta and my PS does not recommend saline when silicone is also available. He's a silicone man for sure. He completely eased my fears about silicone (as did my research).
Check out the Health Canada website (which is basically the Canadian version of the FDA), it has some great information on silicone and the studies done and why it's approved. It's been approved in Canada for almost 6 years now.
The new cohesive silicone does not leak. If you do your research on silicone you will see that the "new" silicone is very safe. You may want to go to another PS for a consult to get another opinion on it.
I'm getting silicone hopefully in December. Would not even consider saline personally as I can't deal with rippling and the sloshing and the risk that if one pops a leak I'd be deflated on one side. But that's just my personal feelings.
Good luck!

Hi, I'm with Mel on this one. I too am in Alberta where maybe they are more prefferred? I did a lot of research also and was very satisfied with what I learned about silicone gels. The fact that they can't leak and less chance of rippling really sold me on them. I also have little tissue so I was concerend about the rippling a lot. The ps's that I spoke with here all said they liked the silicone better.

I called a cannot leak ends next month), since it's been used in Europe for 15 years prior to its introduction here in the U.S. Mentor, only for 3. Another brand of silicone, the name escapes me, is so new that patients are being used as guinea pigs. (Just paraphrasing all that she said here.)
She was argumentative, contradictory on every point, & confrontational on the phone - and I'm annoyed that my first consult would have been with HER and not the actual surgeon. Needless to say, I never made an appointment for a consult with this .Former 34! Now a very full 34C/small D

Dessie,
what you say about most PS preferring saline is totally opposite from my own research and also from talking to many PS.
I suspect 95% prefer silicone due to the more natural feel, less rippling factor.
Dallasgirl,
That nurse was so totally uninformed! It is a shame that she has no idea of what she is talking about. Maybe you should call her bck and tell her to join here and learn! Also..I would report her to the office manager and if she IS the manager then talk to the Dr. She is SO WRONG that is has to harm his practice! Guess she does not know about Mentor Lumera or the teardrop shaped implants Mentor has...Inamed and Mentor make basically the same shapes and styles with small variations.
What an ignoramus she is!Miki

What an ignoramus she is! **** My own ba experience is with saline, and from the standpoint of the implants themselves, I have been totally pleased...they feel totally natural and I cannot tell where the implants end and my own tissue begins. One reason we chose saline also, was because you can do some minor adjustments size wize during or even after surgery that you apparently cannot do with silicones, which only come in pre-measured sizes. I am ending up planning a redo anyway, though, but that is because of concern over assymetry and wanting to go smaller. Maajida

Silicone implants go up in size 25 cc at a time. When sizers are used in the OR they would know how many cc's to put in each sideMiki

Yes, IF the implants were not filled to the max..and then again..it is usually no more then 30-50 cc that can be added..and you know that is a drop in the bucket and will only ad a slight dab of change to the size..not enough to change a cup size for sureMiki

I had saline implants put in on 6-6-06. Swelling is mostly gone and they are a little too small for me. D cup but not a full D cup. If I wanted to go just a little bit bigger they can do this without putting in a new implant? Mine were not filled to capacity. Exactly how is this done? Do you go under anesthesia again? Have an appt w/ PS next Friday-Thanks for your answers.
