Minimum number of calories ... RMR

Question
Just the other day, I learned that when we deprive our body of food (calories) it begins to create starvation hormones - this process starts after three days. Those starvation hormones are also called fat cells! OMG!!! Not fat cells!!!
I had no idea that our body organs need a certain amount of calories in order to function. Geez Louise – where the heck was I during health class? WOW. I’m shocked.
Of course, I had to be snoopy and find out more about calories and http://www.amritraj.net/resting.ivnu-:¦:- ~Cindy~ -:¦:-

Answer
Yes, I put a very good website on here the other day that has all of the calculators you need to figure everything out.

The worst thing you can do is deprive yourself. There's a happy medium, we just have to find it.......that's the hard part.
I think also that the calories needed is more than most people are used to seeing. When it says 2800 calories, your mind says no way, but if you exercise and are active, it's going to be higher. Create a healthy deficit from there and wala.....weightloss!Full Body Lipo/BL- Sept. 29, 2005

I too have learned the hard way and have proven to myself several times that is really does work that way. You can not deprive yourself of food, especially if you are exercising. Yes, I am stubborn and have to continually do a reality check on myself. Old habits die hard!! Doing WW flex plan has really shown me that I have to eat my points, make sure I add my exercise points back in and eat those in order to lose.
I would also like to add something I have learned the hard way that if you are doing any weight lifting (which I love to do) you have to give your muscles that you worked depending on how much weight you are lifting at least 48-72 hrs of rest between working that group of muscles out again. The heavier you lift the more rest they are going to need. Otherwise you are only tearing the muscles down and they are never getting completely built up if you are lifting that same group over and over every day. When I say I learned the hard way, I worked out a lot in the past three years never really had a plan, and never saw any gain as far as muscle growth, never really lost any weight, and I worked hard. Found out after talking to a trainer last month that I was literally defeating myself. I never gave my muscles time to repair and build. Now in the past month I have changed my routine and giving those muscles their much needed rest, I am getting shape, the weight is moving off and I am getting stronger and stronger. I'm not working with a trainer, I just listened to the most important piece of info he gave me. And it's working now!
I have better things to spend my money on than a trainer who wasn't happy that I had a TT, he could have fixed me and gotten me the same results had I paid him instead!! YEAH WHATEVER!! What's funny, this same trainer had watched me all those years working out when I had a big ole tummy and never once approached me to help me. Got rid of the belly, looking really good in my gym clothes now, changed my hair color and low and behold, he suddenly notices me!! And wants to train me!! LMAO!!

You gooooo girl!
I'm so proud of you!!!
I agree with you about not paying for a personal weight trainer. A girlfriend of mine paid 8 weeks for a personal trainer. Uhhh...She's no longer working out. I didn't see much of a difference except she had all kinds of advice for me while I was working out. After 2 or three weeks of her playing the role of "personal trainer, " I finally told her in a very calm voice, "If I want your advice, I'll ask for it!"
I love her dearly, but when it comes to working out she's not someone I would ask for advice.
I have the same problem when working out at Curves (shame on me ) but its difficult for me to take advice from someone who doesn't look like they have ever worked out. I secretly ask myself - how in the heck did they manage to get the job?
I enjoy workinng out. I have no problem apictures/viewAlbum.php?albumid=250

I think this is really interesting because my RMR is 1550 calories, but with weight watchers I only get about 1200 calories per day. I've done other eating plans with a lot of success that were 800 calories per day. I'm confused about how many calories I should eat now. I was always told you should eat your weight plus a zero to maintain. For instance 175 lbs = 1750 calories to maintain that weight.
Therefore if I subtract 500 calories per day from my 1750 calories I will lose one pound a week (500 x 7 = 3500 calories which equals one pound). Maybe I am putting too much thought into this. But I'm afraid 1600 calories per day is a lot of calories to eat and still lose.. I am exercising too.FTT/BL/Lipo hips 11-8-2005

A question for you Cindy - I just read that you are burning 600-800 calories per day. What is your exercise plan? I walk 1-2 miles per day plus cardio/weight training for 1 hour 3 times a week. I figured I was burning about 200 calories a day extra with that.
Thanks for being here!!!

Answer
Diane, you are actually burning a lot more calories than you are giving yourself credit for. Cindy and I both just purchased these new heart rate monitors Polar F6 model that you enter your weight, height, age, date of birth, and sex (think that's all) and it keeps up with calories burned per workout according to your stats you enter which we believe is more accurate than any other way to figure it.
I know I was very surprised to see the difference in what the machines say you are burning versus wearing a HRM and seeing the actual calories burned. There's a big difference and depending on which machine you use as to whether you are actually burning more or less.
I can easily burn 600+ calories in a 90 min workout of combined cardio and weight training session.

Go back on the website I posted and look to the right where it says Daily Calorie Needs. This is where you'll find out how many calories your body needs with exercise included in there. This is where you take the deficit from.....NOT RMR.Full Body Lipo/BL- Sept. 29, 2005

For instance my calorie needs at 5'5, heavy exercise and 210 is 2854. If I eat 500 calories a day less than this, I will lose 1 lb. a week......1000 calories a day less and I will lose 2 lbs. That still puts me eating a good 1800 calories a day because I exercise a lot.
If you exercise, you have to et enough calories to http://www.hussmanfitness.org/
http://www.hussmanfitness.org/bmrcalc.htm
this is the direct link to pop up windows, you have to guesstimate your Body fat.
I hate how there are so many variables to losing weight. Don't eat too much, don't eat too little, don't work out too much, don't work out too little, don't eat too many carbs, don't eat too much fruit, etc etc. It drives me insane. Just when someone tells me I need to eat less, I get no you are starving your body from someone else!
There is also this little thing called BODYGEM that measures your RMR, I had it done when I weighed 165 and I got 1465 as the ammount of cals I needed to just stay alive. I am sure its less now as I am 30 pounds lighter. That totally sucks the less you weigh the less you can eat.FFT/MR,BL/BA, Chin implant/neck lift 12/6

Answer
Thanks Ladies!!! This is definitely an interesting topic...it most likely is the link to my losing some weight! I've been going back and forth about how many calories I should be consuming - 1200 or 1600 or 2000??? It's been driving me nuts!!!
Obviously, the 1600 calorie isn't working for me. The 1600 (give or take 100 ) cals with a 500-800 deficit has pretty much stabalized my weight. In fact, I think I might be edging up. I've been blaming it on salt/sodium. Perhaps, I am starving my body.
"As Hollie mentioned - the many variables to losing weight. Don't eat too much, don't eat too little, don't work out too much, don't work out too little, don't eat too many carbs, don't eat too much fruit, etc etc. It drives me insane. Just when someone tells me I need to eat less, I get no you are starving your body from someone else! "
That talk is downright frustrating. I'm in a plateau - and what Hollie mentioned is exactly what I've been hearing. To me, it doesn't make sense and lately I've been hearing quite a bit of it!!! Last night was my final 6 Week Curves meeting. Of course, we talked about our weightloss summary. My summary, when I first joined Curves - I was eating whatever I wanted. I lost 2lbs the first week. Then, I joined their Weight mgmt class. I lost a pound, gained a pound, lost a pound, gained a pound, then lost 2 pounds and gained inches! Grrr.
My weight is between 164 and 168. 164 is the lowest I've seen and 168 has been the highest in the last 6 weeks. Summary, I pretty much stabalized my weight between 164 and 168. Yes, I lost a few inches but I also gained a few inches. GEEZ I'm confused. Now, I need to figure out how to get out of the plateau (confusion)!
I noticed that I stopped losing weight when I upped my cardio. However, I have been able to shop for a smaller size.
At the meeting, I explained my exercise plan. I was told that If I consume more calories I will gain weight. I was told that If I slacked up on the cardio burns that I would start losing weight. That doesn't make sense!!! I want to work-out, I like working out, I want to discover an eating plan that is right for me and my love of working out. I'm not a sedentary person -perhaps that is where I'm having the problem. I certainly don't want to gain weight or give up working out!!! Working out is my mental wellness - therapy! I walked away a lil frustrated. (Psst...I didn't do my cardio prior to the meeting! )
I've been thinking - there's a couple of ladies there that are losing weight. The only workout that they are doing is working out at Curves.
They lost weight. One lady lost 6 lbs and another lady lost 15lbs. They are not that heavy-the lady that lost 6 bls is now 200lbs. The lady that lost 15lbs didn't disclose her weight. I've never seen her at curves working out. Perhaps, 1600 calories is designed for those who only workout at Curves?
So here's my conclusion, since my body requires a minimum of 1450 calories and I'm burning approximately 500-800 calories, I'm most likely starving myself. I"m going to bump my calorie intake to 2000. I'm active, so I think I'll be ok. But I really don't know if it will work...if it doesn't, at least I can say "I figured it out the hard way!!!
I don't feel like I need more energy (calories) but I'm going to give it a shot. I think I will stick with high pictures/viewAlbum.php?albumid=250

Diane,
Are you still losing weight? Have you ever hit a plateau while on WW? If so, how do you get out of the plateau? How do they (WW) figure out how many calories you should be on? Do you tell them anything about your activities? Totally curious because I believe I have hit a plateau. -:¦:- ~Cindy~ -:¦:-
