It is normal to have some white on your tongue, but if it is covered then white coating is caused by yeast growing on your tongue. Taking antibiotics will make it worse not better. Normally bacteria in your body eat the yeast for breakfast. If you kill those bacteria with antibiotics or mouthwash, then you give the yeast freedom to grow.
The thing to do now is to restore the bacteria and stop the yeast.
First, yeast feeds on sugar, so you have to stop eating anything with sugar in it (candies, bread, potatoes, soft drinks etc). Depending on how entrenched the yeast is, it might take a good month.
Stop using mouthwash or any antibacterial products.
Second, go to your health food store and get some bacteria pills. These pills contain the friendly yeast eating bacteria that you have killed with your antibiotic use. Try to get the ones with 5 different kinds of bacteria.
Third, go back to your doctor and get a prescription for Nystatin pills (not the liquid, which contains sugar). Take those pills for two weeks, even if your tongue clears up sooner.
That should do it.
Question is, how did the white start in the first place? Antibiotic use?

Answer
Always brush your tongue vigorously when you do your teeth. See if this helps.
Answer
Hi Orion,
thanks for the detailed answer.
I originally took 2 courses of antibiotics for an ongoing chest infection. I took antibiotics recetly for a throat infection but I think the sore throat may have actually been from the ongoing problem with my mouth.
Ill give the Nystatin a try.
Thanks...

Yep antibiotics can cause really bad yeast infections and for some reason doctors don't seem to understand that. I only discovered it by accident.
Yep your sore throat can be caused by yeast, but more commonly the yeast causes a sore mouth, lips and tongue made worse usually by acidic or salty foods. You can get some real burning going on with salty foods. If the white goes away, but your tongue is really red on top, you still have the yeast infection and need to keep fighting it until the red turns to pink again.
Another sign of a bad yeast infection is fatigue and loose bowl movements that aren't diahrea. Good luck. There is a great book called The Yeast Connection you might want to look up in the library.
One other thing, you can give your yeast infection to a sexual partner both orally and vaginally. After you are cured, they can give it back to you. So if your partner starts complaining of your symptoms, you both have to get treated or you will just trade it back and forth.
