Question
Hi
I've had mild-moderate acne since about 18, I'm now 21. My acne has mostly been mild-moderate and I decided to try a new diet about 2 weeks ago.
For breakfast I've been eating oats with milk and adding a bit honey for flavour, sometimes I might eat an apple as well.
For lunch I generally eat two ham (off the bone) and lettuce sandwitches with sour dough rye bread, which has no preservatives, added sugar or dairy products. I also might have an apple and snack on some cashews.
For dinner I'll eat lasagne, crumbed chicken breast fillet, lamb, or salmon all with several serves of vegetables (no potatoes) or salad. I even make my own dressing just by mixing olive oil and vinegar.
For dessert I will usually just cut up an apple, some kiwi fruit and some pineapple. Sometimes I'll eat some natural yoghurt which is expensive because it's gluten free, low G.I, has no added sugar, no preservatives and no artificial flavours.
I also drink 2 to 4 litres of water per day.
I've tried to eliminate processed sugar from my diet, and high glycemic foods. Although before this diet I would rarely eat fast food, maybe once or twice a year, I would regularly eat cakes, lollies, and sweets, which I have cut out completely from my diet.
At first my acne started looking really good with this new diet and no new pimples were coming up, now all of the sudden the pimples have started to come back. I don't think it's as bad as originally, but I'm still upset about it.
It's probably not relevant but some people ask whether exercise can help acne. I can't really say whether this applies to everyone, but I am going to the gym 5 days a week, which has never stopped the pimples from coming up. Even when I was training for football 2 nights a week in addition to my 5 days a week gym routine, I was still getting pimples.
There's a few things I'm not sure about, for example some people say not to eat anything processed, so I'm not sure if I should completely stop eating bread. The problem is I'll get very hungry and if I can't eat a couple of sandwitches for lunch .
My second question is whether I should stop eating dairy all together. I tried eating my oats with water, but it wasn't nearly as nice. If no dairy might clear up my face I would be happy to do it though. I don't consume lots dairy and I don't know whether 3/4 cup of milk a day would cause acne.
Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know if maybe the diet would take months to work, and I've only been at it for a little over 2 weeks.
Answer
I have the same problem. I've been eating great for the last few months. It worked great at first, now it's as if it's lost its effectiveness. ***?!

I think diet definitely helps. Make sure you are eating lots of wholefoods (brown rice, beans lentils, oats etc) and lots of vegetables. I don't think it really matters in what combination you eat these, just as long as you are eating a healthy balanced diet and stay away from fast foods and high suger foods.
I also supplement my diet with good fats (fish oil and flaxseed oil). Supplementing your diet with these good fats is supposed to contribute to a healthy glow.
I exercise as well, while it may not eliminate all pimple, sweating eliminates toxins in the body. Basically a natural cleanse. Make sure you clense after you workout.
For me the best product is dermalogica. Just the basic special cleansing gel is enough to maintain. once a week i use the anti-bac cleanser, just for maintenance. The facial brush is alos great to use.
I have tried most of the products over the years and dermalogica is the only one that i use now. I have been using it for over 1year and it is great.
Answer
Hey, glad to hear you made the diet changes. I believe it has a lot to do with acne and overall health in general.
As far as milk in the morning, i agree that mixing your oats with water would taste gross, but why not try a soy, rice, or almond milk? They are dairy free and I get the vanilla flavor which tastes yummy to me.
Also try to stay away from high in sugar fruits like bananas, pinnapple, papaya, watermelon... Focus more on berries, apples, plums, pears, citrus fruits. And limit 2 per day.
Your majority of food should come from veggies (mostly raw) and protein should be lean (fish, chicken, organic eggs, turkey)
Also make sure to incorporate good fats into your body like seed/nuts make a great snack, and salmon is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids so its like a 2 for 1 in the protein and good fat area. I personally stay away from bread because of the gluten, but i do occasionally eat a slice of manna bread which is found in the freezer section at whole foods. Its sprouted grains that havent been heated to the high temperatures most breads have and its mixed with nuts, rasins, fruits and i will usually spread an almond butter on top.
Good job on eliminating the sugar treats, I esspecailly noticed a difference when I tossed my daily ice cream and cookies out the window!
If your acne doesnt improve I can surely guarantee all the fat on your body will melt away if you eat this type of diet! So i guess you cant loose huh? Well good luck and remember to be patient
